Barbados Blackbelly * Raw Sheep Wool * SE2SE * Rare Breed * Hair Variety
🐑 Barbados Blackbelly sheep are a heritage breed on the Watch list. This is a Hair type of sheep and extremely difficult to find shepherds willing to collect the hair.
The hair varieties of sheep shed their hair over several months. Much of the hair falls off in the field so someone needs to walk the field and pick up the hair. This results in a mixture of hair from any of the sheep and the hair is mixed with grass and other VM.
Some of the hair can be collected from the sheep by running your hands through it and pulling it off the sheep. This is time-consuming and one of the reasons people like this breed of sheep is that they don't need to be shorn.
I have been able to get hair from the field and collected hair. In every 4 oz. bag I insert a 2 oz. bag of collected hair and 2 oz. of mixed, field hair.
I have committed to purchase as much Barbados Blackbelly hair as the shepherd is willing to sell to me. With this commitment, the shepherd has more incentive to collect the hair.
