Staple Length:  3.5"     VM: Moderate - Dirty   Crimp:  12 CPI

Special:  5 oz. pack for the price of 4oz.  Because this fleece is dirtier than I prefer I have packed the bags with 5 oz. of fiber to compensate for the dirt weight.

Dixie is a yearling lamb and this is her hogget fleece.  Hogget is the first shearing of a sheep and desirable because it is the softest in the first year.
Dixie and her sisters enjoyed playing in the field as you will see by the dirt in the fleece.  A simple scouring will bring out the sparkling fleece; however, the tips are stained yellow.  When you blend the wool together it will give you a nice creamy white or an excellent choice for dyeing.  Shropshire Sheep are a dual-purpose breed, used for meat and wool, so fleeces are not the primary use of the breed.
The Shropshire is a member of the Down family of sheep and one of the few blackfaced sheep on the Conservation Priority List.
Shropshire wool is Medium & has a fiber diameter of 24.5-33 microns and a staple length from 2.5 to 4 inches. Like all the downs sheep, this medium-grade wool has a springy quality that makes it perfect for hardwearing items such as hats, mittens, and socks.
I washed the wool using Unicorn Power Scour which cleans it up nicely except for a little staining on the tips.  See photo above.
