Staple Length: 1"-2.5" VM: Minimal, Scours easily. Crimp: Very nice, bouncy wool.
Wiltshire Horn Wool has not been available to most people in the SE2SE initiative because it is a shedding wool breed of sheep and the breeders do not collect the wool. It has been thought to be a hair breed, but that is inaccurate. It is a breed that sheds its wool in the spring of each year.
The wool is SHORT. Much of the fleece is 1/4" to 1" long. I am separating the fleece into groups. 1" and shorter, 1"-2", 2", and 2.5" I have several people testing the possibility of using the very short group for felting. If it felts successfully, I will sell that group of wool at a discount.
In the 4-ounce pack of wool, you will receive between 1.5" to 2.5" staple length. I think most people will be surprised to see how nice this wool really is. Due to so much loss in short-staple length, the price is higher than most other breeds of wool, also each sheep only produces about 1 pound of wool.
I hope everyone takes the opportunity to sample Wiltshire Horn Wool and post your thoughts and projects on the SE2SE Facebook Page as well as the Ravelry Group for SE2SE.
So little information is known about this breed, it is our chance to create the information for future fiber artists.
